Duckhorn Merlot Napa Valley 2010With firm tannins and exceptional length, this is a lovely and age-worthy wine that shows how much Merlot can excel in a cooler growing season. The aromas are rich and inviting with layers of amaretto, sweet spice and cedar. On the palate, lush flavors of plum, blackberry and cherry dominate, with the tannins adding structure and depth.Fundamental to that tradition was the early decision by Duckhorn Vineyards to focus on the production of Merlot. Though many Napa Valley wineries were using Merlot as a blending grape in the late seventies, few were exploring the potential of this varietal as a stand-alone wine.A great fan of Merlot since traveling to St. Emilion and Pomerol, Dan Duckhorn felt that this elegant varietal was under appreciated in North America. “I liked the softness, the seductiveness, the color,” says Dan, “the fact that it went with a lot of different foods; it wasn’t so bold, didn’t need to age so long, and it had this velvety texture to it. It seemed to me to be a wonderful wine to just enjoy. I became enchanted with Merlot.”

Lyeth Pinot Noir 2011
Lyeth Estate has created this exciting blend of Pinot Noir grapes from carefully selected vineyards from the most esteemed corners of Sonoma County, including the Russian River Valley and the Carneros regions, each offering its own unique flavor profiles from its terroir. The select lots of wine were blended to develop complexity and true varietal character, while retaining an approachable, rich fruit style that is genuinely delightful and truly satisfying. In 1981, Lyeth Estate was founded in Sonoma County by Chip Lyeth. After having traveled through Bordeaux in the late 1970s, Chip came to believe what the Bordelais had known for centuries: that through blending, you could create a beautiful, distinctive wine, with unique characteristics often very different from the varietals from which it is created. To craft these wines, he brought on his close friend, Bill Arbios. Over 25 years later, we are still dedicated to Chip’s vision of making unique blends.
